FPGA Design Interview Questions and Practice
FPGA interviews combine digital design fundamentals with implementation concerns such as timing, clock domains, reset strategy and resource usage. Good preparation means being able to reason about hardware behaviour cycle by cycle.
High-value FPGA topics
RTL and finite-state machines
Practise synthesizable RTL, counters, registers and FSMs. Be able to translate a state diagram into clean sequential and combinational logic.
Clock-domain crossing
Understand why independently clocked domains cannot safely exchange arbitrary signals directly. Know the purpose of synchronizers and why multi-bit data requires additional CDC techniques.
Timing and latency
Review setup and hold concepts, clock frequency, combinational path delay and pipeline stages. Distinguish latency from throughput when evaluating an architecture.
Practical interfaces
FPGA interviews often use familiar interfaces or board-level inputs as design exercises. Button debouncing, UART, SPI and handshake logic are useful practice because they combine protocol reasoning with RTL implementation.
Questions worth practising
- How would you debounce a mechanical push button?
- How do you safely move a single-bit signal between clock domains?
- What causes a setup-time violation?
- How does pipelining affect latency and maximum clock frequency?
- How would you design an FSM for a protocol controller?
